Cult killings: Three more shot in Awka, police keep mum

Three people were shot dead at different locations in Awka, the Anambra capital on Monday.

This comes after the shooting at Ifite, which left an unidentified resident from Kogi State, said to be a tricycle operator dead.

Monday’s shootings occurred at different locations in Awka, and according to sources, about three people lost their lives in the incidents.

A journalist, who pleaded not to be named, who informed DAILY POST about the shooting around her compound in Ukwuorji, said the incident happened at about 5pm.

“The victim is a private security agent who lives around our area. He is from Abagana and lived with his elder sister until his death today (Monday).

Another source said there was also gunfire at St. Faith Cathedral area, near the popular Eke Awka market and Amawbia area.

The source said: “The one from Amawbia witnessed the death of a young boy who makes and sells shawarma near Eke Amawbia market.

“Eyewitnesses said four bullets were pumped into his head as residents ran for safety.

“The scene of the incident is a pole away from the State CID and Police Command Headquarters in Anambra State, but the gunmen calmly drove away without any challenges.

“People wonder what kind of policing we get in Anambra state. No matter what happened, as long as it’s not in their compound, they just keep quiet.”

Meanwhile, the state’s police command has kept its lips sealed in the face of the murders.

When DAILY POST contacted the state police command on WhatsApp seeking reaction to the incidents, the state police command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, did not respond.

There have been various cases of killings in Awka, which have been attributed to cultism.

The member representing Awka 1 state constituency, Hon Nigeria, Henry Mbachu had before the challenge held a security summit in June, which brought together various stakeholders to seek a way out of the killings, but it has continued.

Analysts say not a week goes by in Awka without cult clashes, leading to killings.
