CHICO — A woman who fired shots in a north Chico neighborhood was safely arrested Saturday morning after a 10-hour standoff with police.

According to the Chico Police Department, Sharna Christe Potter, 36, admitted to firing a firearm when officers made contact with her around 10:37 p.m. Friday at her residence in the 3100 block of Rogue River Drive near W. Eaton Road. Potter then barricaded himself in his home.

Responding officers attempted to negotiate with Potter for several hours until the Crisis Management Unit took over. When members of the crisis negotiation team tried to contact her, Potter fired several shots at the police. But officers “never stopped trying to talk to Potter and take her into custody in the least intrusive and safest way possible,” the CPD news release said.

Potter was arrested at approximately 8:40 a.m. and police then executed a search warrant at the home for evidence that she had negligently fired a gun. CPD said Potter — who had two misdemeanor convictions for failing to appear in court on DUI charges — is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and assault with a firearm on a police officer for this incident.

Responding agencies also included the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Butte County EMS, Cal Fire, Chico Fire Department and the Butte County District Attorney’s Office, along with CPD’s Volunteers in Policing (VIPS). Police used the Code Red system to alert area residents of law enforcement activity.

Investigators continue to search for two Chico women who have been missing for more than three weeks, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said in an update Saturday.

Dolores Sakamoto, 84, and her daughter, Vivian Luna, 64, were reported missing by a neighbor on July 21. Two days later, the California Highway Patrol issued a Silver Alert for Sakamoto, Luna and their vehicle: a black 1996 Lexus ES 300 with California license plate number 6KSP061.
