Who will 49ers keep for Final Roster Cuts at WR?

The preseason is finally over. It means the next step for San Francisco 49ers is to start making final molding cuts. Some decisions at each position will be easier than others.

One of the more difficult ones for the 49ers is at wide receiver. Six receivers is usually what the 49ers carry on their final 53-man roster. Four of the six seats are already set. It will undoubtedly be Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall.

Although you have to wonder if Pearsall starts the season on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list. He has missed a lot of time with a shoulder injury. It will take time for him to be ready. From now on, he will act as if he is healthy. The 49ers don’t really care about that. So the 49ers need to figure out their final two spots after Pearsall.

Veteran Chris Conley is the most likely to earn the fifth spot. He has proven to be a reliable player for the 49ers both on offense and on special teams. Most importantly, he’s a player that Kyle Shanahan trusts. That’s crucial for a wide receiver to have and Conley has it. He’s practically been a lock to make the roster for a while now.

That leaves the tight end spot at wide receiver. The remaining options are Jacob Cowing, Ronnie Bell, Danny Gray and Trent Taylor. Pretty hard decision right? In all seriousness, it’s not. Cowing is the obvious choice. He showed impressive ability in his two preseason appearances. Both as a wide receiver and as a returner.

Conley and Cowing are most likely the two receivers the 49ers will keep. Bell has been a roller coaster throughout training camp and the preseason. Gray is underwhelming and Taylor is… he’s just a guy. One or two of those players will be on the practice squad. The 49ers themselves have a pretty sweet group of receivers heading into 2024.
